Wind or Not, Steady Rains can Bring Flood Damage to Sterlington
Recently, hurricane Gordon was downgraded to a tropical depression, and while it did not hit us directly in Sterlington, our weather often reflects such events. Many reports stated that Gordon's winds were lower than a hurricane's but not by much, resulting in the change in its categorization.
Even with the reduced wind velocity pushing such storms into the Sterlington area, flood damage can happen to your home. The Red Cross encourages everyone, regardless of their location, to prepare for disasters, especially those most likely to affect them, during National Preparedness Month. Those in lower areas and valleys, near creeks, streams, lakes, and ponds, or where recent construction took place should know how to prepare for flooding that can damage their homes and other property. Others who reside in higher areas can also experience flooding. Our residents in the State of Louisiana are all too familiar with flooding from natural disaster.
SERVPRO employees can help mitigate flood damage after it happens with the latest in technology, expert skills, and hard work, but reducing the possibility of such damage from occurring in the first place falls on the individual family. Preparing for disasters may seem ineffective or a bother, but doing so can save property while also reducing the chances of injury. Preparing by getting things ready and practicing what to do during September helps our communities, also, by focusing on the issue together. Of course, being ready to deal with a flood during the entire hurricane season is prudent.
Moving more valuable items to higher elevations can help prevent their loss. Filling sandbags can also help keep floodwater from entering your home. When rain plays a role in flooding your home, making sure your gutters and downspouts drain correctly can help prevent flooding issues not related to contaminated groundwater.
