Eliminating The Effects of Flood Damage in Monroe
Although Monroe is far enough north to almost be in Razorback country, flooding is still a problem thanks to the closeness of the Black and D’Arbonne Bayous and Wildlife Refuges. Heavy rains can send hundreds of gallons of water into a home in a matter of hours, and even minutes in some cases.
The water in this type of Monroe flood damage is either category 2 (gray water) or category 3 (black water). Both require extensive efforts by SERVPRO restoration teams to properly clean the home and property and return it to the owner in a safe condition.
Neither type of water is actually gray or black. The colors refer to the level and type of contaminants. Both contain dirt and waste products, which can cause sickness if swallowed and force disposal of contaminated property after they absorb it. Blackwater though, also contains animal and human waste, along with everything else the water picked up before carrying it into the home. The only way to eliminate these threats is with two methods: removal and disposal of affected personal property, and sterilizing the surfaces of everything else.
Getting the water out of the home quickly is the first step. Even water with no contaminants (clean water), if left in place for 24 hours, absorbs enough dirt, debris, and chemicals like carpet cleaners to become gray water. Another 24 to 48 hours later, and the flood can be classified as black water. That is why SERVPRO response teams arrive on-site with a full complement of pumps and extractors to get started immediately.
After spraying every now exposed surface with an antibacterial agent, our technicians carefully remove contaminated items like carpets, carpet pads, curtains, paper, and even clothing. If a furniture item has exposed wood, they may have to dispose of it as well. For property with treated wood, glass, metal, and marble surfaces, wipe down and clean them off using more antibacterial cleaners.
In some cases, team members can treat items like upholstered furniture and return it to the homeowner. They use sprayers and injectors to force cleaning agents into the fabric to counteract and remove the contaminants.
